Prince William, heir to the British throne, is visiting Brazil, where he will fulfill a schedule of commitments related to environmental issues. This Monday (3), at Morro do Pão de Açúcar, he received the key to the city from the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes.
“It was an honor to receive the keys to the city at the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, before an exciting few days with the Earthshot Prize and the United for Wildlife Programme,” said the prince, in a post on social media.
The prince will participate in the Earthshot award ceremony, considered one of the main environmental awards in the world. The award was created by the prince with the mission of identifying and accelerating solutions with the potential to restore the planet by 2030.
The delivery will take place on Wednesday (5), at the Museum of Tomorrow, Rio’s port area, with the presence of international leaders, innovators, scientists, philanthropists and civil society representatives to recognize transformative and scalable environmental solutions. Each of the five winners will be awarded a prize of 1 million euros.
The five categories to be awarded are: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean the Air, Revive the Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fight the Climate Crisis.
Mayor Eduardo Paes said that during the visit to Pão de Açúcar, he showed the city’s best-known spots.
“He remembered his father’s visit here. He remembered his mother’s visit here. Anyway, they have a lot of affection for Brazil and especially Rio”, he stated.
