Prince Harry and his wife Meghan visited Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday en route to the Netherlands, where they are attending a sports competition for the war-wounded and disabled, a spokesman for the couple said.
Several British media indicated that the meeting was at Windsor Castle, about 40 km from London. The visit comes just days before the 96th birthday of the sovereign, who lost her husband Prince Philip a year ago.
The couple was criticized by the English tabloids for not attending a mass in memory of Enrique’s grandfather, held at Westminster Abbey, on March 29.
Harry, 37, and his wife Meghan Markle, 40, decided two years ago to distance themselves from the British royal family and live in California. Since then, they had not returned to the UK together.
His visit comes on the way to The Hague to attend the Invictus Games, organized by the Duke of Sussex for wounded or disabled soldiers.
Following their estrangement from the royal family, the British government withdrew public police protection from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their visits to the United Kingdom., a decision that Enrique has challenged in court.
