“I have been invited by the president of Cuba to make an official visit on April 26 and 27. As you know, we have very strong bilateral relations with Cuba,” Skerrit said. He had also pointed out that Cuba has been an “unwavering friend” and has provided significant assistance to the health and education sectors of Dominica, where most of the doctors are Cuban.
“Without Cuba’s medical professionals, the health system would not have been able to sustain itself, especially during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic,” he stressed, while highlighting a bilateral relationship that is based on “the benefit mutual” and that Dominica respects the sovereignty of Cuba and always calls on the United States to lift its economic blockade.
The US embargo on Cuba, which was in force for six decades last February, significantly restricts and complicates the Caribbean island’s economic, commercial and financial relations with the rest of the world.
According to Cuban News Agency (ACN), Cuba and Dominica will celebrate 26 years of diplomatic relations on May 18, although these have existed since 1979, when the Free Scholarship Program began, through which young people from Dominica have graduated in Cuba in university and intermediate level careers. , in different specialties.
Permanent Cuban medical collaboration in that country began in 1997 and was reinforced with the dispatch of brigades from the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, according to the Cuban source.
