Primary Commission defends María Corina Machado and urges participation on #22Oct

Despite the fact that no disqualified citizen can hold positions of a political nature and, therefore, if he wins an election, he could not assume the presidency, the National Primary Commission clarifies that this sanction is not an obstacle to Machado’s participation in the primaries.


The National Primary Commission published a statement on the night of this Friday, June 30, in defense of María Corina Machado, a candidate for the primary process coordinated by this body, because hours before the General Comptroller of the Republic ratified her political disqualification.

For the governing body of the primaries organized by the opposition to be held on October 22, this and other disqualification measures contemplate unconstitutional acts and are contrary to international standards on human rights.

“These disqualification measures issued are an unconstitutional sanction and contrary to international standards on Human Rights, since they not only violate the guarantee according to which the exercise of citizenship or any of the political rights can only be suspended by sentence firm judicial system, but also against the participation and free and plural deliberation of ideas that every democratic society requires,” the statement said.

The letter also stressed that it is a “repeated” practice that aims to prevent the free expression of the will of the voters, conditioning the candidates who can participate in the presidential election to be held in 2024.

Besides, the commission urges all the democratic sectors of the country to promote participation in the opposition primaries, in order to complete a democratic event that allows a glimpse of the will of the Venezuelan voters.

“The National Primary Commission urges the democratic sectors of the country to redouble their efforts to promote participation in the Primary election on October 22, since the electoral path is the right one to solve the current challenges that the people are facing. of Venezuela,” the document concluded.

María Corina Machada disqualified

On Monday, June 26, the Primero Justicia deputy, José Brito, filed a request for information with the Comptroller General of the Republic to find out the status of Machado and other opposition politicians.

Four days later, he received a response and informed the Venezuelan population that the national coordinator of Vente Venezuela was disabled. Despite the fact that the disqualification measure that originally weighed against her in 2015 restricted her from political activity for 12 months, in this new document the comptroller indicates that the suspension would be for 15 years.

As a result of this measure against the candidate who has led all the polls for the opposition primaries, political leaders inside and outside Venezuela have criticized the decisionincluding an ally of Chavismo, Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
