Santo Domingo.- The priest of the Las Mercedes church in Pueblo Viejo de Azua attributed the tragedy of last Sunday to the lack of control by the authorities, stating that “in the area of the accident there are no police or civil authorities to impose order.”
Father Rafael Cuello considered that a celebration should never have been allowed at the site, due to poor visibility, as it is a curve, located in the La Bastidas community, on the Azua-San Juan highway.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday in Las Bastidas, in the municipality of Las Yayas, when a truck loaded with avocados hit dozens of people who were drinking alcoholic beverages in front of a grocery store.
“What happens in this country is that corruption is stronger than justice. On one occasion, an attempt was made to control the consumption and sale of drinks, but complaints and pressures from powerful sectors arose and everything remained the same,” lamented Father Cuello, in an interview with The National.

The accident left at least six dead and 31 injured, and it is believed that the death toll could rise, as several of the injured are in critical condition.
The priest also spoke about the use of narcotic substances, stating that “minors aged ten and twelve consume cocaine anywhere, using hookahs.”
The use of alcoholic beverages on the streets causes difficulties for many citizens, who have to detour to continue their route, according to complaints made to this editorial office.
Many people complain about the apathy shown by the police, who are there to prevent the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public places, according to the law.
