PRI begins re-election process; Alito registers for re-election

This is because two weeks ago the PRI National Assembly approved modifying the party’s basic documents to allow the re-election of the leader and the general secretary for two more terms; that is, Alejandro Moreno and Carolina Viggiano could stay until 2032.

In this meeting, Alejandro Moreno again called his opponents “lackeys” and assured that in 2019 he received a party “in pieces”, which he asserted he has rebuilt.

“The party has never been besieged by the harassment of power. We found ourselves in the crossfire. We have been exposed to the meanness and betrayal of profiles that have used years of their PRI career to gain the comfort, security and benefits that surrendering to power brings,” he said.

He reiterated that the PRI must be exonerated from actions committed by PRI members in past years, since he said that the new generations of the party cannot bear the burden of the mistakes of others.

“Exonerating the PRI of actions for which there are those responsible is a specific thing to do. We require that those responsible be held accountable for their actions. This generation and we cannot bear the past mistakes of others, as cynics who betrayed the PRI and handed over power and who are now scared to death,” he declared to applause from PRI members.

Lorena Piñón Rivera and Cuauhtémoc Betanzos also registered for this process, they were the first formula to register. Both are close to Alejandro Moreno. In her message, after registering, the federal deputy used part of Alito’s speech and supported the reforms that support the president’s reelection.

“Here in the PRI there is no room for sacred cows or enlightened people above the militancy; I do not agree with those who thought that the PRI should remain immobile in a post-electoral depression. The National Assembly showed interest in rebuilding us and this internal process represents that the PRI infantry will not give up,” he said.

On July 10, the PRI’s Political Council approved that the party’s Assembly of Councilors be the one to elect the next leader of the party for the 2024-2028 period; however, the majority of the members of that internal body are close to Alejandro Moreno, so it is expected that they will seek to promote the reelection of “Alito.” This act will take place on August 11.
