The cheaper electricity bill was one of the factors that helped the official January inflation preview lose strength and close at 0.20%. In December, the index had remained at 0.25%. 
With the result of the first month of 2026, the Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) accumulates 4.5% in 12 months, the maximum limit of the government’s inflation target. In December, the accumulated figure was 4.41%.
The data was released this Tuesday (23) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed by IBGE, two showed a decline in average prices from December to January:
- Housing: -0.26%
- Transport: -0.13%
- Education: 0.05%
- Clothing: 0.28%
- Personal expenses: 0.28%
- Food and drinks: 0.31%
- Household items: 0.43%
- Communication: 0.73%
- Health and personal care: 0.81%
