Pressure on FIFA for the ‘Byron Castillo case’

Pressure on FIFA for the 'Byron Castillo case'

The lawyer of the Chilean soccer federation (ANFP), Eduardo Carlezzoaffirmed this Tuesday that if the selection of Ecuador competes in Qatar, “the World Cup is stained”, and insisted that there are “sufficient evidence” of falsehood about the origin of the player Byron Castillo.

Three days after FIFA resolves the lawsuit filed by the ANFP, the Brazilian lawyer increased the pressure on the entity by stressing that “it would be scandalous” if the complaints that show that Castillo has played with altered documentation in the national team are disregarded Ecuadorian because, according to his findings, he was actually born in Colombia.

“The burden of proof is too high.” “All clubs, all soccer in Ecuador, know what happened to Byron Castillo. So, it seemed important to me that people know all the background,” added the lawyer.

Carlezzo warned that the proximity of the World Cup and the fact that the groups have already been drawn play against the demand of Chile, which is “looking for the points and the quota for the World Cup.” “With all the background we have, should we remain with our arms crossed? If I did that, I would hand over my lawyer’s license and dedicate myself to something else. It is something forceful and we hope that FIFA will analyze it technically,” he argued.

It also goes against the aspirations of the ANFP that “apparently there will be no specific investigation of the player and that worries me a lot. Byron Castillo had to speak and the sporting bodies had to listen to him. That’s not gonna happen”.

“We delivered all the tests and the player is Colombian, but the World Cup is close and what we asked for has never happened. I can say with complete certainty that if we had more time, without any groups drawn, I have no doubt that we would have a favorable decision for Chili,” he explained.

“But when there are tickets sold, travel packages, all the preparation for the World Cup, the easiest decision is to leave everything as it is. We will go to the Court of Appeals and then, if everything is still negative, the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” he added.

The alleged responsibility can reach the Ecuadorian Federation

Carlezzo admitted that the alleged responsibility may reach the Ecuadorian Football Federation and not only the player, who has not declared to date.

“From the beginning, the Ecuadorian Federation knew about Byron’s past. That’s why they separated him from a sub’20. They had the whole story and they had received complaints, but they never did anything. Is it because the player was too good to get him out? “, he asked himself. “The falsification of player documents is not something new in Ecuador,” he stated.

“There was a consolidated scheme of data falsification in Ecuador, of local and foreign players. Since the pressure was so great, the Federation was forced to sign a collaboration agreement with the National Civil Registry Office. It was precisely that institution that would become an inspector. The issue was that big,” he concluded.
