Pressed for time, three organizations aspire to become new parties

The Constitution, the laws and the Guidelines of the National Electoral Institute (INE) establish that they must be carried out 200 district or 20 state assemblies, and gather a little more 256,000 members so that they can be established as new parties.

The three finalists

On the way 63 groups have remained interested in being a party and only these three took the necessary actions to advance.

Even so, the three that remain face a complicated panorama, since they need to hold more legally convened assemblies with the required quorum, verified by the INE to guarantee that citizens come and vote on the basic documents freely.

Juan Marcos Dávila Rangel, specialist in electoral law and protection, suggests that the new political forces face a certain lack of interest on the part of voters, but it is a generalized phenomenon, since the “old” parties also face it. The low citizen participation in the judicial elections last June confirms that citizens are not motivated to go to the polls.

“For the elections of the Judicial Branch, only 13% of the nominal list of voters voted, that is, the lowest vote in Mexico historically. Although the political parties did not participate there, it reflects that citizens are not interested in the polls nor do they see themselves represented by anyone. There was disinterest in the judicial election and the parties also did not manage to communicate well what the different offer they have is,” he points out.

That is why he considers that The 2030 elections are where the loss of registration of an “old” party will be at risk. and some of the new ones that achieve registration in 2026.

“I believe that some parties are at risk due to that internal division they have, they no longer have cohesion and I don’t know, I don’t think it will be in the 2027 election, but for the 2030 election, that is where some parties that we know will be at serious risk (…) I see the PRI more in that vein, for example, if it fails to establish alliances,” he says.

What is the Somos México registration about?

Of the three organizations, the one that aims to be an opposition party is Somos México. It had its origins in the so-called ”Pink Tide” – whose members marched in favor of the INE and the candidate Xóchitl Gálvez – and reached the last stage of the process with the complaint that local leaders or Morenoist governors had blocked them.

Somos México originally proposed that in September it would cover the requirements: 256,030 members and 200 district assemblies, since they would even plan to hold one in each of the 300 districts of the country.

For now they have covered less than half of the required affiliations, they are missing 144,812 and they have held 90% of the necessary assemblies.

Emilio Álvarez Icaza, one of the visible leaders of the organization, emphasizes that almost a hundred assemblies called by Somos México have not taken place and accuses obstruction of their success.

The former senator without a party denounces that obstacles have been put in place for them to advance in the registration process as a party, among them that pressure is exerted on citizens, social programs are conditioned so that they do not participate in meetings or “assemblies of social programs are called on the same day and time to boycott them.”
