Presidents of the Supreme and Senate meet in the STF

The presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), and of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux, met today (3) for about 45 minutes in the Court. The meeting took place amid President Jair Bolsonaro’s decision to grant constitutional grace to deputy Daniel Silveira (PTB-RJ), sentenced by the court. After the meeting, Pacheco defended dialogue between the Powers and said that Congress can discuss improving the conditions under which grace can be decreed, but cannot overturn Bolsonaro’s decree.

“Faced with an unusual situation that was the decree of grace, Congress was faced with a situation that cannot fail to validate the decree for free, because it is a prerogative of the President of the Republic, but there is a concern to contain a feeling of impunity,” he said.

The Senate president also said that all institutions are committed to democracy.

“What we cannot allow is that the electoral intensification, which is a natural part of the electoral process, can lead to serious anomalies, such as being allowed to talk about military intervention, institutional acts, election frustration and the closing of the STF. be contained”, he declared.

In a note, the STF said that the presidents reinforced their commitment to harmony between the Powers.

“They talked about their commitment to harmony between the Powers, with due respect for constitutional rules. And they stressed that the institutions will continue to act in favor of non-negotiable democracy and the soundness of the electoral process”, declared the Court.

Ministry of Defense

After meeting with the president of the Senate, Luiz Fux, he received the Minister of Defense, General of the Army Paulo Sérgio Nogueira. According to a note released by the Court, Nogueira told the president that the Armed Forces are committed to Brazilian democracy and declared that, within their competences, the military will act so that the “electoral process proceeds normally and without incidents”.

“The Defense Minister also reaffirmed the permanent state of readiness of the Armed Forces to fulfill their constitutional missions,” the ministry said in a statement. At the meeting, Fux stated that the Court values ​​harmony between powers and respect between institutions.
