President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received, on Tuesday (18), the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is visiting the state to Brasilia. The two had work meetings at the Planalto Palace and, at night, attend the Camões Literature Award Adélia Prado, at Itamaraty Palace.
Camões is the main prize of Portuguese Language Literature and Adelia will be represented by his son Eugênio Prado.
The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, who is the head of government of the country, is also on an official visit and, on Wednesday (19), he and President Lula will preside over the Brazil-Portugal summit, which is in its 14th edition. At the time, bilateral acts are foreseen and press declaration.
The high -level meeting brings together leaders of both governments to discuss and strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas, such as defense, safety, justice, science, environment, trade, health and culture. In 2025, the 200 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries are celebrated.
Currently, more than 500,000 Brazilians reside in Portuguese lands, and about 150 thousand Portuguese live in Brazil. It is the second largest Brazilian community abroad, behind only the United States. In 2024, the Brazil-Portuguese Trade Current was US $ 4.7 billion. Brazilian exports were US $ 3.4 billion, with a national surplus of US $ 2.1 billion.
