Presidents Boric and Arévalo accuse Ortega at the UN of being a “dictator who violates freedoms”

Presidents Gabriel Boric, of Chile, and Bernardo Arévalo, of Guatemala, took advantage of their space during the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization to criticize the dictatorial regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo that keeps Nicaragua under repression.

«To denounce before this Assembly and the world the persecution that everyone who thinks differently from the government of the dictatorial regime of Mr. Ortega and Murillo in Nicaragua is experiencing today, where not only is their participation in elections prohibited, but they are persecuted, “They deprive them of their nationality, their homes are raided and they are deprived of political rights,” Boric said in his speech.

Boric has been a strong critic of the Ortega government and other dictatorial governments in the region, which has also generated insults from the Sandinista. During the police parade to salute the 44th anniversary of the constitution of the Nicaraguan National Police, Ortega called Boric “a little pinochetito.”

Ortega also stated that the “Chilean Police (carabineros) are formed for mass murder, formed to murder the people very far from the Nicaraguan Police.” Boric described the Sandinista dictator’s comments as an “insult.”

«The dictator Ortega insulted the institution of the Carabineros of Chile. “I want the police to know that I immediately instructed our Foreign Minister, Alberto van Klaveren, to present a diplomatic note of protest,” Boric said.

Guatemala criticizes violations of freedom in Nicaragua

For his part, the president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, during his speech at the UN General Assembly expressed his deep rejection of the repression of “freedom” and “justice” in Nicaragua.

“We reject, in the hemisphere and in the world, any attempt to repress the aspirations for freedom and justice expressed by the people of the world through free and democratic processes, as is happening right now in Venezuela and Nicaragua,” Arévalo said.

Arévalo recalled that Guatemala welcomed 135 former Nicaraguan political prisoners released after mediation by the United States with the government of Daniel Ortega in early September.

“The principles of democracy are fundamental to preserving freedom, dignity and the inclusive and equitable prosperity of humanity,” said the Guatemalan president during his first participation in said assembly after assuming the presidency in Guatemala.

Ortega faces a complaint from eight countries before the UN, including Brazil, which recently joined the protest before the world body, denouncing the clear human rights violations committed by the Sandinista regime since 2018, when the country experienced protests by hundreds of thousands of citizens against said government.

A group of United Nations experts (GHREN) that has closely followed the political crisis in Nicaragua published a report at the beginning of the month in which they accuse Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, of “coordinating” a repressive apparatus directed from the State. to establish a system of terror with “serious violations and abuses of human rights.”
