The presidential candidate for Popular Freedom, Rafael Belaunde Llosa He was attacked with bullets this morning while he was traveling in his truck in Cerro Azul, according to former Prime Minister Pedro Cateriano.
The leader of that political group also rejected the attack against Belaunde, who emerged unharmed from the attack. Some photographs show the politician with a bloody face and the windshield of his vehicle with bullet holes.
In communication with Peru21the general commander of the PNP, Óscar Arriola, reported that the candidate was alone in the area traveling in his vehicle through some land of his property that is not in dispute and that when he left the place along a trail he was attacked by two hitmen on a motorcycle, who allegedly shot about nine times. Belaunde repelled the attack using his firearm.
“Mr. Belaunde fired at least 12 shots as well. There were no injuries in the attack. He was alone, he did not have a driver,” said the police chief, who reported that the Police have already activated the siege plan.
“We are waiting for the reports on the tolls, the exit, the witnesses, a thorough investigation is being carried out of which we will be reporting to public opinion,” he said.
Arriola pointed out that Belaunde told him that he has not received extortion threats linked to possible land trafficking.
“Mr. Belaunde points out that he has not received threats of extortion nor has he had problems with the land, as sometimes happens, nothing like that,” Arriola stated.

The president of the National Election Jury also condemned this attack and expressed his concern for the safety of the candidates in these elections.
“We want them to be safe elections, for people to feel safe. We want there to be no attacks against candidates; we stand in solidarity with the candidate who suffered this attack,” he told Perú21.
