President Jair Bolsonaro approved today (28) a bill that recognizes the carnival of Acarati, (CE) as a manifestation of national culture. The purpose of the sanction is to value the culture of carnival in the city and consolidate it as a tourist destination.
The Acarati carnival is a tradition in the city of Ceará and is of great importance for tourism and the local economy. In 2019, around 474,000 people celebrated the festivities in a single night and boosted the local economy.
The festival is held mainly at four points: Praia de Majorlândia, Praça da Comunicação, Rua Coronel Pompeu and Rua Coronel Alexanzito. In the latter, the “cultural carnival” takes place, as it is part of the historic center of Acarati, with Portuguese mansions and houses dating back to the colonization period, when the city was an important economic hub for charqueadas.
This collection of buildings from the colonial period led the city to be considered a national historical and artistic heritage by the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) in 2001.
National Capital of Ethnicities
Also on Friday, the president sanctioned a bill that confers the title of National Capital of Ethnicities to the city of Ijuí (RS), recognizing the ethnic diversity of the city.
At the end of the 19th century, the city of Rio Grande do Sul had a great development with the arrival of thousands of immigrants, attracted by promises of freedom and opportunities made through government propaganda. Despite finding a different reality, many settled in the city.
Due to the different ethnicities and varied customs, the city became known as the “Land of Diversified Cultures” and has in its calendar of events the National Festival of Diversified Cultures.
