President Jair Bolsonaro said this Friday (2) that he regrets the assassination attempt suffered by Argentina’s vice president, Cristina Kirchner, last night (1st), in Buenos Aires. Asked by journalists during his participation in the 45th Expointer, in Esteio, Rio Grande do Sul, Bolsonaro referred to the attack he himself suffered during the 2018 elections, when he was stabbed in Juiz de Fora (MG), during a campaign act. .
“I’m sorry, it’s a risk everyone takes, I almost died in 2018 and I didn’t see the left worrying about me, but that’s okay,” he said.
Then, when asked again about the matter by reporters, he reaffirmed that he regrets it and said he expects an investigation into the crime.
“I’ve already said that I’m sorry, although I don’t have any sympathy for her, I don’t wish that for her, now, when I was stabbed, these people on the left were silent, but it’s okay, we have hearts, and I’m sorry for what happened and I hope that the investigation is done, to know if it was in his head, or someone who would have hired him to do this”, he added.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry repudiated the attack: “The Brazilian government condemns the unjustifiable act of aggression against the vice president of the Argentine Republic, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner”. According to the statement: “Brazil repudiates any form of politically motivated violence and reiterates its invariable support for our sister nation Argentina.”
Outrage
The attack on Cristina Kirchner took place when she and her entourage arrived home, around 9 pm, in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires, capital of the country, where dozens of supporters were concentrated. Images shown by the media show the moment when a man approaches the crowd and points a gun inches from the deputy president’s face, but not fired. Then security intervenes.
The person responsible for the attack was captured by the police and identified as Fernando Sabag Montiel, 35, who is Brazilian but has lived in Argentina for more than two decades. He testified and remains in prison.
In a speech on national radio and television shortly after the incident, the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, confirmed that it was an attempt at magnicide (murder of public figures) and called for society’s repudiation.
“Cristina is still alive because, for a reason not yet confirmed technically, the gun that had five bullets did not fire despite having been cocked,” Fernández said.
