President Piñera’s fears after March 11

President Piñera's fears after March 11

It is not new, and it has been President Sebastián Piñera himself who has openly confessed it on more than one occasion: this second administration was much more complex than his first visit to the government house. Social outbreak, Pandemic, and the economic crisis, just to name the three most significant events, had the president by the ropes.

In this context, and beyond the fact that he has overcome two constitutional accusations against him, and that they had him at one point deploying all the political power that the government contemplates to stop them – one in the framework of the social outbreak and the other after the revelation of the “Panama Papers” – there are several problems with which he will have to learn to live once he leaves the Executive.

In the first place, and according to palace sources, the President, in a context in which the country -in his eyes- is very different from the one he received four years ago, would have indicated that he was not sure if he would be able to go out for a quiet walk again streets. There have been many occasions in which the Head of State has shown the social tension with which he lives daily in the country, and that would be the main reason for his fears.

The outgoing head of government would also have confessed that from March 11 onwards, he would prefer to lead his life in a second line, far from the protagonism and the costs that he himself carries. In this sense, his efforts would aim to raise his foundations with family ties such as Futuro, Tantauco and Mujer Emprende.
