This Tuesday the President of the Republic, Sebastian Piñera, signed a bill that guarantees greater legal autonomy for people with disabilities.
“Today we take a new step forward in this cause with this bill that recognizes the full legal capacity of people with intellectual, physical or sensory disabilities,” said the president.
In turn, the head of state indicated that “In this way, they will be able to exercise their civil and political rights, such as the right to vote, the right to dispose of their assets and the right to decide the person with whom to marry.”
Currently, the law legally considers disabled people as incapable, which prevents them from taking action. For this reason, the initiative seeks to “restrict the concept of dementia to people who have medically diagnosed disorders of reason that are severe and permanent. In these cases, their ability to exercise their rights is restricted,” the President clarified.
In addition, the project “removes the deaf and deaf from the list of people who are considered legally incapable. They will become people with full legal capacity.”
Another novelty that this initiative brings are the figures of the “facilitator” and from “attendee”. The first supports people who need to carry out legal acts to protect their rights, while the second collaborates in communication.
The initiative was signed by the Head of State, the Minister of Social Development, Karla Rubilar; the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín; and the Minister of Education, Raúl Figueroa.
