President Piñera responds to the next government after criticism for extension from the Labor IFE: "If they accuse us of wanting to govern until March 11, I plead guilty"

President Sebastian Pinera and the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgadoresponded to the criticism issued by the future head of the Treasury, Mario Marceland the next government spokeswoman, Camila Vallejofor the extension of the Labor IFE and the Protect Subsidy until June 30, without first consulting with the new administration.

Marcel yesterday questioned the Executive for the extension of these benefits, after a meeting with the current Minister of Finance, Rodrigo Cerda, in view of the transfer of command. “It commits public resources, which have to do with measures that are implemented within the period of the next government without having had information about it,” he said.

Subsequently, the criticisms were reiterated by the future government spokeswoman, Camila Vallejo. “We have reiterated that this government has a mandate until March 11, but it cannot continue pretending to govern after March 11,” she snapped.

Faced with questions, President Piñera responded – at a press point about the arrival of Moderna’s anticovid vaccines – that “if they accuse us of wanting to govern until March 11, I plead guilty. We are going to govern until March 11.” March, but I am surprised by this reaction from the incoming government for many reasons.

“What do they want? That we stop promoting employment and protecting mothers and children? We have done it in a very responsible way. The resources for these programs are contemplated in the Budget Law, which is the law of the nation and for all Chileans. It runs from January 1 to December 31. It does not start on March 11,” added the President.

“In addition to that, it is very important that we have left a fund for the future government, as we agreed with them. There is a freely available fund, which is absolutely intact,” he added.

Delgado’s response

Earlier, the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgadoalso responded to the summonses of Marcel and Vallejo.

“What the future minister Marcel has said is not very clear, it is not clear if the IFE does not like the respective policies or if they wanted to do it or if they are questioning us that the 2022 budget, which begins on January 1, should start on March 11 or 12,” he said.

“Always in terms of security, rather than sticking with the words of the future minister Marcel, I stick with the words, for example, of the future government spokesperson minister (Camila Vallejo), who has said that this government must govern until 11 March and we are doing that,” he added.
