The President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, reported that five Chilean families managed to cross from Ukraine to Poland. This, within the framework of the armed conflict that is taking place in the European country, which after the invasion by Russia, has meant the death of more than 150 people and another 316 wounded.
“I want to tell you with great joy that today the first Chilean families began to cross. Five families have already crossed from Ukraine to Poland, assisted and helped by our consuls and by our embassy in Poland,” he said.
“The families that have already crossed are those of Gonzalo Saenz, Enrique Loyola, Rodrigo Bravo, Luis Espinoza and Carlos Mena, who are already safe in Poland,” he added.
Regarding the movements that the State of Chile is making to be able to withdraw the compatriots to safe areas, the president pointed out that the consuls were asked to help the Chileans.
“We have asked our consuls to go to the Ukrainian border to help Chileans and their families to avoid the risks that a war means,” he stressed, with the aim of “being able to seek safety first in Poland and then, Depending on the circumstances, we can eventually think of them returning to Chile”.
As for the number of Chileans who are in the conflict zone, the President established that there are fifty people.
“There are approximately fifty Chileans, plus their families,” who live in Ukraine, adding that “we made contact with the vast majority of them a long time ago.”
Regarding the conflict that has taken place in Ukraine, which has been marked by the advance of Russian troops, President Piñera once again condemned the event, stressing that this invasion is the worst world conflict since what happened in 1939.
“It is inconceivable that in the 21st century Europe is facing the worst armed conflict since the Second World War,” he concluded.
