In Colombia, a presidential phrase unleashed a debate that already has an echo in justice. During a Council of Television Ministers on September 15, 2025, Gustavo Petro said that men called Brayan are “vampires” that do not protect women or children.
“Lost boys in life, I call them ‘Brayans.
Their statements were seen by many as a message loaded with social stigmas and raised criticism for the risk of promoting prejudices and discrimination against those who bear that name.
The answer soon arrived. The influencer known as El Brayan announced the creation of the Brayan Association of Colombia (ABC), a group that seeks to resignify the name with humor and pride.
A judge admits the guardianship against the president
The debate reached the judicial stages. Jhon Brayan Enciso Quintero filed a guardianship action claiming that the president’s statements violated his fundamental rights to the good name, honor, equality and dignity.
The Second Civil Court of the Circuit of Bogotá admitted the action and sent it to the Commission for Investigation and Accusations of the House of Representatives, in addition to notifying the Presidency of the Republic and the Ombudsman’s Office.
The judicial document reads: “The knowledge of the guardianship action established by Jhon Brayan Quintero against the President of the Republic of Colombia Gustavo Petro Urrego is avocado for the alleged violation of the fundamental rights to the good name, honor, equality and dignity …”.

The case has opened a broad debate on the impact of rulers’ words and the limits of political discourse. While the Colombian Brayan association bets on humor and resignification, the guardianship action raises the discussion in a legal scenario where it will be tested if there was violation of fundamental rights.
