“Like our friend Enrique Márquez, a prominent Venezuelan progressive, Carlos Correa, a prominent human rights defender in Venezuela, has been detained. This, and other facts, prevents my personal attendance at the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro”wrote Petro in his X account.

In the message he added that “Colombia’s request was not attended to in the sense of maximum transparency in the last elections, when such a possibility was exposed in various political meeting spaces to which we were invited. In Europe, in Venezuela and in the United States.”

And for President Petro, the last elections in Venezuela “They were not free. There are no free elections under blockades”.

“The Colombian government understands that our two peoples are linked by blood, culture and history, and that closing borders, avoiding diplomatic relations and separating our peoples by force is enormously brutal. It leads to the borders being owned by mafias, and the hunger of millions of Colombian and Venezuelan human beings and their exodus is caused, and the systematic violation of their human rights”said the Colombian head of state.

Despite not attending, President Petro said that Colombia will not break diplomatic relations with Venezuela, nor will it intervene in the internal affairs of that country.

However, he asked that the fight for human rights be respected in both nations.
