Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and symbol of humility and closeness with the most needy, died on Monday, April 21 at 7:35 in the morning (local time) in his residence of Casa Santa Marta, in the Vatican.

He dedicated his entire life to the service of the Lord and his Church, ”said Cardinal Farrell in his message disseminated by the official channels of the Holy See.
The news surprised the Catholic world and the international community, since the Pope had made a public appearance less than 24 hours before, on Sunday, in the Plaza de San Pedro.

Colombia joins the world mourning
The reactions of international leaders did not wait. From Colombia, the Foreign Ministry issued an official statement expressing its regret for the departure of the Argentine Pontiff.
«The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Colombia, expresses its most felt condolences for the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, first Latin American leader in the history of the Catholic Church to occupy the papacy. Today, the Latin American people and the world lose a reference of peace, ”says the text.

For his part, President Gustavo Petro expressed his sadness through his X account, where he wrote: “I was a great friend. I feel something alone.” In another paragraph, he highlighted the spiritual role of the Pope: “He perfectly understood his role as a spiritual leader in the great struggle for life … until always: Francisco.”

The Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio assumed the papacy in March 2013 and during his 12 years as the leader of the Catholic Church, he stood out for his defense of the poorest, his closeness with the marginalized and his firm position against social issues such as migration, climate change and peace.
In 2017, he visited Colombia by invitation of the then President Juan Manuel Santos, as a gesture of support to the peace process after signing the agreement with the current FARC today. His passage through the country was remembered by millions of faithful as a symbol of reconciliation and hope.
