The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, arrived in Riyadh this Tuesday to participate in the ninth edition of the economic forum ‘Future of Investments’ (FII), where he met with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohamed bin Salman, the Presidency reported.

“The meeting marks an important step in the consolidation of bilateral relations and in the international projection of Colombia towards the world.“, noted the presidential office on social networks. The president highlighted in X that, after this appointment, “Immense investment and trade possibilities open up for Colombia and Saudi Arabia since they are complementary economies and not competitive with each other.“.4

In the Saudi capital, added the Presidency, the Colombian head of state”will lead (an) agenda to drive sustainable growth at the FII summit“, informally known as the ‘Davos of the Desert’, which this year is celebrated under the motto ‘The key to prosperity: opening new frontiers of growth’.
Riyadh is the first stop on the president’s new tour of the Middle East, which will last until November 4 and will include visits to Egypt and Qatar. The latter country currently hosts peace talks between the Colombian Government and the Gulf Clan, the largest criminal gang in the country.

The talks formally began in September in Doha with an agreement that contemplates an initial stage of “confidence building” and a pilot plan to replace illicit crops in five municipalities where that group operates.
The president had already made a similar tour of the Middle East in February of this year.when he participated in the World Government Summit in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and then traveled to Qatar to strengthen diplomatic relations and advance strategic agreements on trade and energy transition.

Upon his return, Petro will preside in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta at the IV Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the European Union (EU), which will be held on November 9 and 10.
