The president of the Republic, Gustav Petro, ahead of a visit to the municipality of El tartin the department of North of Santander, where he was received by a crowd of people and the Catatumbo peasant guard in the main square where hundreds of citizens were waiting for him.
The president held a security council in the region and announced the holding of the first ‘cocaleros assembly’ of the country in the region.

“That the first assembly of peasant farmers of corn be held in Catatumbo. Coca leaf with the intention that a peasant family that is dedicated to the coca leaf and paste, can replace that with an activity that guarantees more quality of life and the possibility of raising their children and grandchildren”, expressed Petro.
Likewise, he announced more dialogue in the Catatumbo region, so that be “the capital” and “front line” of peace in Colombia.
“That the peasant’s daughter can be a doctor and perhaps her son, a general,” added the president.

For the head of state, if coca leaf crops are increased in Catatumbo, “violence, deaths, massacres, assassinated social leaders and mass graves increase.”
