The president of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), Gladys Gutiérrez, held a meeting on January 28 with the vice president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Luz Ibáñez Carranza, in the framework of the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to the country.
Gutiérrez, who traveled to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, highlighted the commitment of the TSJ and the Venezuelan judicial system to comply with the commitments established in the Rome Statute, to work together with the ICC under the terms of the memorandum of understanding that was signed in November 2021 with prosecutor Karim Khan.
He took the opportunity to reiterate the Venezuelan Executive’s complaint regarding the sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries, describing them as an “aggression.” However, he stressed that despite this inconvenience, he stressed that they continue to work to enforce the legal system.
For his part, Ibañez Carranza recognized the work that the Supreme Court is carrying out in Venezuela and highlighted the importance of interaction and communication between the ICC and the countries that sign the Rome Statute; with emphasis on the role of complementarity between jurisdictions, according to a press release from the Power of attorney.

The visit of the president of the TSJ, Gladys Gutiérrez, to the ICC is generated while the prosecutor Karim Khan waits for the Chamber of Preliminary Questions I to authorize him to resume the investigations for the Venezuela I case, where the Venezuelan State is accused of the alleged commission of crimes against humanity.
In the middle of November 2022, said Chamber invited the victims to present their observations on the process opened for alleged crimes against humanity in Venezuela. Those summoned may have a voice through their lawyers already recognized by this court.
Despite the request made by the administration of Nicolas Maduro In order to try to limit the participation of the victims, the Chamber of the ICC invited “the victims and their legal representatives to present their opinions and concerns”, regarding the request of the prosecutor Karim Khan to resume the investigation in The Hague in the face of impunity that prevails in Venezuela.
