The president of the National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society (SNMPE), Julia Torreblanca, warned that illegal mining It can become a disturbing agent of the 2026 elections.
“We are concerned about the influence that illegal economies would have, in particular illegal mining, during the campaign and electoral process for the choice of our next rulers. They will try to infiltrate political parties to promote candidates related to their interests and will allocate part of the profits of their illicit activities for this purpose,” he said in Perumin 37.
In that sense, he said that illegal miners would be looking to have control and regulation of their illegal activities, and for this they need to have in key positions of the next government and powers of the Peruvian State to characters that manage to neutralize actions against illegal mining and weaken the supervisory institutions.
“Beyond environmental damage, illegal mining represents a direct threat to national security, biodiversity conservation, public health, the protection of human rights, health and safety of workers; but also for our democratic system and institutionality,” he said.
Given this, Julia Torreblanca insisted on the need for a transparency pact to be signed and for the governance of Peru, where all – as citizens – we commit to monitoring the actions of political organizations.
“We have to ensure that the political parties, candidates for Congress and the Presidency of the Republic, as well as the applicants to the mayors and regional governments, are, not only suitable to hold the position and comply with their promises, but that we confirm all Peruvians that their campaigns are not financed by illegal economies,” he noted.
