The Chairman of the Duma or Chamber of Deputies of RussiaViacheslav Volodin, left this Friday for Cuba, the first leg of his tour of several Latin American nations.

Volodin will participate this Saturday in Havana in the first meeting of the cooperation commission between the Duma and the National Assembly of Popular Power (ANPP) of Cuba, as reported by the Duma in a statement reviewed by the Efe agency.

The deputies will address the approval of laws to promote exchanges in the economy, energy, education, agriculture and tourism sectors.

According to the outlet, Volodin, who will be accompanied by several deputies and senior officials of the Russian Government, is expected to be received by the Cuban leaders, the official note stated.

Cuba and Russia have maintained historical relations of friendship and cooperation that have been promoted with bilateral exchanges between senior officials, especially after the visit to Russia last November by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, received by his counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Similarly, the island was included in the Latin American tour carried out this month by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, who also traveled to Brazil, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

In recent months, the secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, the president of the Cuba-Russia Business Council, Boris Titov, and the CEO of the oil company Rosneft, Igor Sechin.

After Cuba, Volodin will visit El Salvador, the vice president of that Central American country, Félix Ulloa, reported this Wednesday.

Efe recalls that this announcement comes shortly after a controversy generated in the Central American Integration System (SICA) due to the full admission of Russia as an observer State.

Meanwhile, Putin stressed this Friday in his speech before the Council of Legislators in St. Petersburg the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and denied that Russia is going to bet on isolation.

“On the contrary, we will expand pragmatic, peer-to-peer, mutually beneficial, and exclusively partner relations with friendly countries in Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America. We are ready to work with those foreign partners, global companies and corporations that value their reputation and want to cooperate with Russia,” he said.
