President of the PPD and resignation of Jeannette Vega: “When a minister is asked for a dialogue with all the actors, you do not only speak with those who agree with you”

After pointing out that “his intention was to fulfill the Executive’s mandate in terms of dialoguing with all the actors,” the president of the PPD, Natalia Piergentili, reiterated her support for the resigned Minister of Social Development, Jeannette Vega, who stepped aside after of knowing a publication about efforts that one of his advisors would have carried out last May to hold a dialogue with the leader of the Arauco-Malleco Coordinator (CAM), Héctor Llaitul, formalized for crimes sanctioned by the State Security Law.

Piergentili commented in an interview with meganews that “I think she assessed that although (Llaitul) may not have been a person wanted by the police the minute she tried to establish a dialogue, the contexts change. Today we are ten days away from a very relevant Plebiscite for Chile, so she assumes that she has a political responsibility and tenders her resignation.”

“It seems to me that this speaks well of her, of the height with which she looks at things and that her role is ultimately not only to be a Minister of State, but to understand that she has to be a facilitator of good government management, and when that she puts herself in check, she decides to step aside, and it only makes me have a tremendous impression of her”, specified the PPD helmsman.

Natalia Piergentili noted that Jeannette Vega’s decision “is correct, because I think that when she tries to establish a broad dialogue, as other governments and Minister Moreno did in the Government of President Piñera, where a relevant actor was this Mr. Llaitul, he wasn’t being wanted by the police, far from it, but contexts change.” And he added: “one when she made a decision with a context and this changes, we have to take charge and I think we have to clear the path so that we reach a Plebiscite with a state of complete calm. I think she evaluated that, because if He was still in the cabinet, he was going to have to continue to point out a certain defense, which while he was right, could alter the political climate.

Along the same lines, the president of the PPD ruled that “when a minister is asked to hold a dialogue with all the actors, you don’t just talk to those who agree with you, but you try to talk to those where the greatest number of conflicts”, adding that “former minister Moreno also tried to speak with Llaitul”, seeking to “deactivate a conflict”.

“I think that the momentum works here too, when you receive a mandate to dialogue, you want to do the best you can and sometimes you skip certain steps that could have made this have a different outcome,” concluded Piergentili, stating that “I am completely sure of the word of the President, insofar as the mandate was dialogue with those who want peace, and that finally she took that instruction in a perhaps broader way than might have been prudent”.
