The board of directors of the Inter-American Development Bank approved the dismissal of its president, the Cuban-American Mauricio Claver-Carone, for accusations of having a sexual relationship with a subordinate.
Board members had until Tuesday to vote electronically on whether to fire Claver-Carone, but enough votes had been cast Monday afternoon to remove the first American to lead the bank.
An investigation conducted at the request of the bank’s board determined that Claver-Carone violated ethics rules by raising the salary of her chief of staff, with whom she had a sexual relationship since at least 2019, when they both worked at the White House.
Cuban-American Claver-Carone will chair the Inter-American Development Bank
Claver-Carone has denied the relationship and said the investigation was seriously flawed. Last week, the bank’s executive board voted unanimously to urge the board to remove Claver-Carone.
Executive Vice President Reina Mejía, a Honduran who has spent most of her career working for Citibank in Central America, will replace Claver-Carone.
