President of the CNE "scolds" Enrique Márquez for presidential statements

The CNE discussed in a session on November 1 the “implications of the repeated public interventions” by rector Enrique Márquez on the national agenda. The president of the electoral entity, Pedro Calzadilla, assured that this type of statement “endangers the fulfillment of the task to which we are obliged”

The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Pedro Calzadilla, publicly warned the rector and vice president of the organization, Enrique Márquez, not to participate “in the debate of political actors”, after having pronounced on the date of the next presidential elections.

The rector, according to the Twitter account of the CNEsaid that the authorities “have a responsibility to stay out” because they are the electoral arbiter.

In an interview granted on Monday, October 31, the Chancellor Marquez He assured that the electoral entity has not discussed, nor is it on the agenda, an eventual advance of presidential elections in the country; which are scheduled to take place at the end of 2024. This is in response to official officials, including Nicolás Maduro, who have raised this possibility.

“The rectors have the responsibility to guarantee the conditions so that Venezuelan society can settle its differences through electoral means. Publicly intervening in political diatribes endangers the fulfillment of the task to which we are obliged,” Calzadilla said.

Pedro Calzadilla’s statements came at the conclusion of a CNE session where the “implications of the repeated public interventions” by Márquez on the national political agenda were discussed.

“The public opinions constantly issued by Rector Márquez are not only contrary to the commitment we made to the principles of this institution, but also put the peace and balance achieved this year at risk,” Calzadilla assured.

The current electoral authorities were appointed by the National Assembly elected in 2020 in May of last year, after the regional and municipal elections in November.
