President of Sinafum described those who protest for better salaries as "fees"

Orlando Pérez said that when things were “difficult” in Venezuela there were no protesters, but “now that there is economic recovery,” they do. He expressed that in a year and a half there was a significant salary increase and that they currently have “purchasing power”

The deputy of the National Assembly elected in December 2020 and president of the National Union of Teachers Unitary Force (Sinafum), Orlando Pérez, revealed this Tuesday, June 28, that the Teachers are currently discussing the project of the third collective agreement to make the readjustment corresponding salary.

Pérez indicated that a new meeting will be held on July 12 to continue the discussion with the 17 organizations that -according to the State representative- include all the workers in the sector, detailing that they are nine teachers, three workers and five of the administrative staff involved.

He asserted that in 2021 these union organizations managed to “improve wages by 280%”, recalling that in July of last year the education sector was the only one to receive an increase. He even emphasized that in December there was another adjustment of 61%, for which he praised that there have been two increases in six months.

He recalled that in March 2022, President Nicolás Maduro was asked to review the salary issue and the food bonus. In the case of teachers, there is a collective agreement that indicates that if there is an “overlapping of the tabulator by salary increase decree, the salary must be adjusted.”

In this sense, Pérez highlighted that the union organizations made a projection -according to inflation levels- of an adjustment of 400% increase, but he explained that Nicolás Maduro took into account the movement that the basic education subsystem in the country, which helped stabilize the economy.

He commented that adding the adjustments of July and December 2021 and then March 2022 gave a projection of more than 1000% increase in salary, passing a salary of 10 to 15 dollars to 100 and 120 dollars of a teacher 4, of day of work 40 hours, according to the premium. Similarly, he highlighted that those teachers who complete 53 hours a week -8 hours a day of 60 minutes- began to earn a salary of 150 dollars in March.

In his opinion, teachers agree because “they have purchasing power.” However, he commented that the observations come from the issue of bonuses and spoke on behalf of Sinafum by recalling that what was there was an income and not a “salary”. That is when salarization was proposed in March.

«Anyone who takes out through the networks or anyone who is calling to go against the human right of education (…) who called to go against the wages of the workers were those who demanded the blockade and invade Venezuela. Now, that the salary is being recovered, there are those who call a strike, those who call a strike from the health sector (…) They are paid because when things were very difficult, there was no one who was claiming », he pointed out in VTV.

He stated that in the third collective agreement an increase of 100% is proposed for this year; for 2023 of 90% and 2024 another 100%, emphasizing that it is in the salary and not in the bonus.

He also believes that the Ministry of Education must be “transformed” and also the laws that govern both basic and university education and the action of the teacher.
