President of Mexico is surprised by letter from Panama appointing ambassador Pedro Salmerón

Radio Panama

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, expressed his surprise at the letter from the government of Panama on the subject of the decision to appoint Pedro Salmerón as Ambassador of Mexico in Panama.

“The request has not been sent and it caught my attention that they are responding,” the president of Mexico assured journalists regarding the issue of the appointment of Saleron, who is accused of alleged sexual harassment.

The president of Mexico made it clear that “no (we will reconsider), because we consider that (Salmerón) is a capable person, I already said it last time. He is one of the best historians in this country”, he is the one who has written the best about Villa, about the formation of the Northern Division, I recommend his book, it is a doctoral thesis”, commented López Obrador.

“I don’t know what they are proposing. No, that is a procedure, the request has not been sent yet, it caught my attention that they are already responding. First it is the approval and then it goes to the Senate, but it is a procedure,” said the president.

López Obrador said that if there are complaints in the Public Ministry, he will withdraw his support for Salmerón.

“So, I am not willing to give in on those things. Now, if there is a trial, if there is evidence and it is in the Public Ministry, it is in the judge, it is accused, well how are we going to defend it, in no way”, he added.

The Government of Panama expressed its opinion to Mexico on Monday regarding the intention to appoint Pedro Salmerón as Ambassador to that country, reported the Panamanian Foreign Ministry, but did not specify what it is.

“The position of the Panamanian Foreign Ministry has already been stated, the Mexican Foreign Ministry is aware from the moment we were notified of this designation,” Panamanian Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes told reporters.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced on Monday 15 appointments for Mexican representations abroad, one of them that of Salmerón, who in 2019 resigned from the Government’s National Institute of Historical Studies of the Revolutions of Mexico (INEHRM) after several accusations of sexual harassment.

His appointment sparked protests from students and former students of the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico, who claimed that they were victims of sexual harassment during his time as a professor.
