President of Iran says he wants to deepen political and economic relations with Nicaragua

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday during his visit to Nicaragua that he will seek to “deepen his economic, political, cultural relations and in all areas.”

Raisi was received by Ortega in Nicaragua from Venezuela, but unlike the meeting in Caracas where they signed 25 cooperation agreements, in Managua the visit remained only a public speech.

“Our relations are not usual traditional relations, they are completely strategic relations, we want to increase and deepen our relations in all political, economic, cultural areas and in all their spheres, especially in matters of science and technology,” said the Iranian president. without adding more details.

Ortega, for his part, attacked the United States in a public speech and said that Nicaragua “has been a country attacked like no other in Latin America” by US troops who, according to him, sought to take control of the country.

“I was commenting to the president of Iran that Nicaragua has really been a country attacked like no other in Latin America and the Caribbean, by invasions of North American troops, of the United States Army, always looking for how to dominate Nicaragua… Years have passed years and over the years the United States rather launched itself more voraciously against Nicaragua. And what are they looking for? Control of Nicaragua,” Ortega snapped.

“Twinning of dictatorships”

Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have denounced both governments as brutal dictatorships that violate human rights, which has led democracies such as the United States and the countries of the European Union to impose sanctions against both regimes.

And this criticism has been joined by Nicaraguan organizations such as the Nicaragua Nunca Más Human Rights Collective, which indicated that the visit of the Iranian president “does not represent any kind of benefit for the people” but rather “is to strengthen those ties and increase the current existing narrative which is to say that in Nicaragua there is no demand from the people for justice, for freedom and for democracy”.
