The National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) confiscated on Thursday, December 6, the largest shipment of cocaine ever recorded in the Dominican Republic, consisting of 9.8 tons of the drug.
The discovery occurred inside a container on a ship from Guatemala, docked at the Caucedo multimodal port.
According to EL DÍA sources, the seizure was made while local personnel were trying to transfer the drugs to another container that would be loaded onto a ship bound for Belgium.
The seized shipment far exceeds the largest seizures previously recorded in the country. In 2021, 2.3 tons of cocaine were confiscated in a similar operation, where the drug was also found in a container destined for Europe. In 2019, another notable operation managed to capture 1.8 tons of cocaine in a port in Haina.
The drugs were incinerated on Monday, December 9, at the headquarters of the First Infantry Brigade of the Army of the Dominican Republic, located at kilometer 25 of the Duarte highway, in the Pedro Brand municipality.
With the help of Colombian police intelligence, 9.5 tons of cocaine have been seized in the Dominican Republic.
