At a press conference on the morning of Monday, July 29, the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, reported that Panama is withdrawing diplomatic personnel from the Venezuelan embassy due to the electoral situation in that nation where general elections were held this Sunday.
“Regimes that do not respect human rights and violate freedoms do not deserve diplomatic recognition. Too many abuses have been committed in Venezuela. Only 0.13% of Venezuelans abroad were eligible to vote,” the president said.
“I cannot allow my silence to become complicity. The government of Panama announces the withdrawal of diplomatic personnel from Venezuela and suspending diplomatic relations until a complete review of the minutes and the computer system of the vote count is carried out to determine the genuine will of the people.”
Mulino also requested a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, as established by the democratic charter, to convene a meeting of foreign ministers to discuss Venezuela’s relations.
