The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, acknowledged before the President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, that the Interoceanic Canal is property of Panamanians, and showed his support for the Panamanian position in light of the recent statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
This during a meeting held by Presidents Mulino and Sánchez in Davos, Switzerland, within the framework of the World Economic Forum.
President Sánchez expressed his satisfaction with the efficient management of the Canal under the Panamanian administration, and stressed that Spain recognizes the Neutrality Treaty that governs the waterway.
He also invited his Panamanian counterpart to visit Spain to participate in the IV International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held in Seville from June 30 to July 3, 2025.
For his part, President Mulino requested support from the Spanish Government to intercede before the European Parliament, and thus achieve the removal of Panama from the discriminatory lists of the European Union.
Both agreed to maintain open dialogue on issues of bilateral interest.
On the Panamanian side, President Mulino was accompanied by Ministers Javier Martínez-Acha (Foreign Relations), Julio Moltó (Commerce and Industries) and Felipe Chapman (Economy and Finance), as well as the Ambassador of Panama in Switzerland, Juan Alberto Castillero.
