The president along with the two former presidents and Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo left on the morning of this Sunday, January 1, from Air Base No. 1, heading to Brasilia.
The invitation to participate in the act of inauguration of Lula as president of his country was extended by Lacalle Pou to Sanguinetti and Mujica days ago. This emulates what was done by former president Tabaré Vázquez who, on the occasion of the inauguration of Alberto Fernández as president of Argentina in 2020, invited the then president-elect Lacalle Pou to travel together to Argentina.
“That is what Uruguay has to demonstrate, no one is going to be surprised if I tell them that I have some political difference with President Mujica, and that I have more coincidences with President Sanguinetti. That is the democratic, institutional and republican continuity that in today’s world, few countries, in the entire globe, can show”, said Lacalle at the time of making the invitation.
