President José Jerí announces more drastic measures in prisons

President José Jerí announced that the Government will apply “much more forceful” measures to confront the crisis in penitentiary establishments, as part of the fight against crime.

The statement was made during the supervision of a operation in the El Milagro prison, in La Libertad, where cell phones, knives, handmade chargers, almost 3 kilos of drugs and notes linked to alleged extortion were seized.

José Jerí highlighted that the searches carried out since the beginning of his administration are essential to stop the criminal activities that take place inside the prisons, despite criticism that describes these operations as a “show.” He stated that actions like these seek to attack a problem that, according to him, was ignored by previous administrations and which is now being executed progressively and permanently.

“Despite the fact that some criticized that why we did a show, but it is not a show, it is to address a problem that authorities of the past preferred to look at to the side and not here,” he assured.

The president maintained that, although time is limited, the Government is making efforts to dismantle extortion mechanisms in all the country’s prisons.

He also pointed out that, since he assumed the presidency, the advance of crime has been controlled and work is being done to reverse its trend. The operation was supervised together with the ministers of Justice, Defense and Interior.

“The Gatilleros del Alto Chepén”

In the La Libertad region, the president arrived at the Captain PNP Alcides Vigo Hurtado Criminal Investigation Complex, in Trujillo, where he received information about the dismantling of the criminal gang called “The Gatilleros del Alto Chepén”.

The intervention allowed the capture of its alleged members: Yeison Ángel Castañeda Silva (24), Jhoan Franco Bazán Díaz (19) and a minor under 17 years of age identified with the initials BMPM
