The president José Jerí called for a “national agreement” in order to determine the agenda to follow in the fight against citizen insecurity and guarantee a “clean and orderly” electoral process.
Through the official account of the presidency, Jerí issued the call hours after meeting with the high command of the Armed Forces and the National Police as well as with the president of the Judiciary, Janet Tello Gilardi, and the acting prosecutor of the Nation, Tomás Gálvez in the Government Palace.
The new president’s main challenge is to confront the wave of extortion and hitmen that has increased considerably in recent years and that represented the main problem of Dina Boluarte’s management.
As is known, in his inauguration speech, Jerí proposed declaring the “war against crime” and requested the joint commitment of the Police, the Armed Forces, the Judiciary and the Prosecutor’s Office to confront crime; The meeting with Tello and Gálvez is part of that call for coordination.
So far, no official documents detailing formal agreements derived from the meeting have been released. It would be a first “constructive” meeting to promote urgent coordination mechanisms between institutions in the face of the perception of increased insecurity and the need for rapid responses.
