Along with ruling out the use of public resources for the trip of the former holder of the post of First Lady, President Gabriel Boric addressed the statements of his partner, Irina Karamanos, about the triumph of the “Rejection” option in the plebiscite on September 2022.
Karamanos stated that there were “terror campaigns” against the proposal made by the extinct Constitutional Convention. “It was said that the little you have was going to be taken away from you,” explained the former socio-cultural coordinator of the Presidency, who traveled to Madrid to participate in the International Feminist Meeting. Given Karamanos’s statements, the opposition fired criticism against him, causing President Boric to come out to shield him. After his return to La Moneda, after participating in the commemoration of the death of former union leader Tucapel Jiménez, President Boric clarified that his reflections on the past plebiscite and those of the Government were already made public, both in September and October of last year.
“Irina has the right to have the opinion that she deems appropriate and it is not up to the government to be commenting on the opinions of a person who has her own track record, independence to give her opinion and who is not subject to any kind of obligation,” said the Head of State.
Finally, to rule out any doubt, in reference to right-wing parliamentarians who he perceived “were a little worried”, Gabriel Boric affirmed that Irina Karamanos’s trip “does not have any public resources from the State of Chile involved. Not one”.
Prior to President Boric’s remarks, the UDI deputy, Flor Weisse, described the intervention of the former socio-cultural coordinator as “inappropriate”. The unionist parliamentarian regretted that Karamanos “walks around the world untruthfully, pointing out that the refounding proposal proposed by the Constitutional Convention was rejected out of fear, hatred, promotion of discrimination, it is insulting the sovereign will that he so overwhelmingly rejected a bad text.
