As part of his visit to New York, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, participated in an interview where he was asked about various things, including 62% of the votes that the Rejection received in the plebiscite of exit.
As a result of this and in conversation with CNN Internationalthe President pointed out that “you cannot go faster than your people, we have to go a little slower” and that “pretending to be ahead of your time is a way of being wrong.”
“We want changes, to deepen them, it is my interpretation, but we want to maintain what we have gained in the last decades and we know that the changes are not from one day to the next. Therefore, we will have to go slower, and that is fine and We are going to comply with a new agreement to have a new Constitution during our period and I am certain that we will achieve it,” he said.
“It is going to take longer than we had thought, but that is democracy. One of the things that I am most proud of is that in the most difficult times that Chile has experienced in the last two decades, we have decided to resolve our differences with more democracy, not with less”, he added.
Likewise, the head of state defended the proposal for a new Constitution from those who said that it was “too far to the left”.
“I don’t think that’s true, it was a Constitution built by 2/3. Before that we had a great election that expressed that. It should also be remembered that we had another plebiscite where 80% of Chileans said we want a new Constitution made by a special body elected for that,” he said.
