The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, announced through his Twitter account that he has already received some recommendations from the Technical Table for Medications, to continue the process of correcting shortages and “guaranteeing accessible, reliable and safe medicines” for the population and that in view of this, it approved the submission of the Executive Decree that regulates Law 1 of 2001, which includes Title 4, to eliminate the obstacles that allow more medicines to enter the local market.

The president highlighted that, through an Executive Decree, he approved the modification and expansion of Decree No. 869 of October 27, 2021, on the abbreviated procedure for the request for the sanitary registration of medicines.

In addition, it ordered the regulation of Law 109 of November 12, 2019, which adopts the National Policy on Medicines in the Republic of Panama, to adapt the regulatory/legal/fiscal conditions that favor the local production of medicines.

It also authorized the invocation of Article 106 of Law 1 of 2001 on Medications, with the aim of creating a subcommission to determine the medications that will be included in the emergency list.

According to Cortizo, these specific actions will allow health facilities to go from “there are no, to there are (medicines)”.
