In the midst of his visit to Mexico, the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, referred to the constitutional debate in the country, where the various political parties are carrying out negotiations to guide the second half of the constituent process.
In this sense, the President recalled that the social crisis of 2019, which prompted the search for a new Constitution, is “perhaps the biggest we have experienced in our years of recovery of democracy, in 1988, 1990.”
“In the social crisis of 2019 we made a decision that was difficult at the time, which was to solve the problems of our country with more democracy and not less. And in that all the political forces and also the social forces have been taking part of that process, which had an important setback democratically executed, which was the plebiscite; the plebiscite a few months ago where the proposal that the Convention made to the country was rejected,” he declared.
Despite the result, the head of state maintains that it is still a consensus that a new Magna Carta be generated, since trust is “shattered.”
“Today there is full awareness – I hope – in the vast majority of political actors, that Chile needs a new Constitution. Clear rules are required. Build trust, but in my country trust is cracked, we are trying to rearticulate them,” he said. .
