President gabriel boric closed the door to the request of I Approve Dignity to freeze the public transport rate for all of 2023. At a press point in Thailand -the President met there for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC)-, Boric pointed out this Thursday that “is not sustainable”.
Let us remember that the Minister of Transport, Juan Carlos Munoz, pointed out in October that there will be an increase in the price of tickets during the next year. The value of the fare has been frozen since 2019. This, after an increase of $30 pesos triggered the mobilization of high school students, making massive evasions in the Santiago Metro. These acts led to a social outbreak.

“This is not a matter of Approve Dignity or one collation or another. We are a government alliance, and what I express to all the parties and parliamentarians who support us is that it is important that we behave as such”, commented the head of state at the press point.
“The Government has to take a definition on a subject that is particularly sensitive. In moments of economic crisis, we know that families must be supported, and at the same time we know that the freezing of rates for more than three consecutive years is not sustainable over time,” he added.
“We have to reach a balance based on the state of the economy and the situation of the family that needs it the most,” the President emphasized.
Likewise, he maintained that “we are going to worry about protecting Chilean families and protecting the fiscal coffers, and in that balance we are going to find a solution that we will present to the public as soon as possible.”
“We are discussing it with the Minister of Transportation, Juan Carlos Muñoz, and the Treasury, but rest assured that it is in our interest to take care of the pockets of families that we know have not had a good time in the face of the crisis,” added the Leader.
