President Gabriel Boric and his Peruvian counterpart, Pedro Castillo, announced the strengthening of joint efforts to combat two issues that afflict both countries: crime and migrant smuggling. This, after the bilateral meeting they held in La Moneda.
After the IV Binational Cabinet was held, the President announced the creation of a new bilateral work scheme named “Plan Santiago”, in which five axes to be addressed were defined. Among them, he mentioned social issues and culture for integration; foreign trade; security and defense; sightseeing; environment, among others.
In this sense, the head of state emphasized that “I want to highlight the fight against crime and security. Security is today a priority in both Peru and Chile and we know that there are organized crime gangs operating on both sides of the border.”
“Many times crime does not recognize borders, and therefore we are developing joint work with the Carabineros, the Investigative Police and the National Police of Peru to confront these gangs,” he added.
He also announced that “we have implemented the 2022-2023 binational work plan to strengthen, in particular, the fight against human trafficking and migrant smuggling.” “In addition, we will hold a new meeting of the Peruvian-Chilean Mixed Commission on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, to monitor and continue the fight against drug trafficking,” Boric concluded.
