President Boric addresses controversy in Spain: “Fake news has done profound damage to social coexistence”

The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, warned this Sunday of the danger that false news poses for the country and put what happened in Spain, after the denunciation of Pablo Iglesias, one of the leaders of Podemos, as a result of the spread of dubious information.

“Fake news has done profound damage to social coexistence. Here we see what they have done to Podemos in Spain for years, which is not very different from the practices of many in our Latin America. Let’s take care of our democracies,” Boric said. through his Twitter account.

The Chilean president joined the heads of state of Argentina, Colombia and Mexico; who also condemned the lies that affected Iglesias.

“Today it has been shown how news is spread against Pablo Iglesias to revile Podemos. The same thing happens between us,” Fernández wrote on his Twitter profile, citing a tweet from Iglesias himself.

“The false news spread by certain journalists to defame, discourage or persecute political leaders deeply wounds democracy,” added the Argentine president, who charged against some media outlets in his country for “sowing discouragement” in the population.

Argentina’s presidential spokesperson, Gabriela Cerruti, also repudiated the “fake news” against Iglesias and Podemos, comparing it to the situation experienced by former Brazilian president (2003-2010) Lula da Silva.

“When we talk about “fake news” we talk about processes that play with the life and freedom of people, as in the case of Lula da Silva, but also with the vote and the right to decide being well informed, as has just been demonstrated with Podemos,” Cerruti wrote on his Twitter profile.

Later, Iglesias thanked Cerruti for his words in a message posted on the same social network.

“Thank you, compañera. You know better than anyone what judicial and media ‘lawfare’ means,” said the former second vice president of the Spanish Government.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that “millions of countrymen are going to be angry with my grandfather, but the campaign of the conservatives against the leaders of Podemos is outrageous and outrageous”; while the president-elect of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, pointed out that “with the collaboration of members of the police, a journalist decides to defame, knowing that the news was false, a progressive movement in Spain. Everything was discovered in the end. It seems like ‘Deja wow'”.

The former leader of the leftist formation denounced a smear campaign against him and Podemos, in which a well-known Spanish journalist was involved for spreading news of an alleged payment made in his name by the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, in 2016, for value of $272,000, knowing it was fake.

The controversy surrounding false information about Podemos has been on the rise in recent days, after the dissemination of a conversation between María Dolores de Cospedal, former secretary general of the conservative Popular Party (PP), and José Manuel Villarejo, a veteran commissioner of Police who worked for the Spanish Ministry of the Interior and who is related to numerous cases of corruption and political espionage in Spain.

In that conversation, both allegedly planned a corruption plot to destroy the reputation of the leaders of Podemos.
