SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader leads a follow-up meeting in the Green Room of the National Palace, together with representatives of the Emergency Operations Center (COE) and other government institutions, to evaluate prevention and response measures against the advance of Tropical Storm Melissa over Dominican territory.
The meeting is attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz; the Minister of Labor, Eddy Olivares; the general director of Purchasing and Contracting, Carlos Pimentel; the mayor of Santo Domingo Este, Dio Astacio; the director of the National Meteorological Office (INDOMET), engineer Gloria Ceballos; and the director of the COE, Major General (r) Juan Manuel Méndez García, among other officials and representatives of emergency organizations.
The meeting aims to coordinate immediate response actions against the rains, gusts of wind and flooding that have been recorded in different areas of the country, mainly in Greater Santo Domingo, where flooded roads and accumulation of water have been reported.
Sources from the National Palace reported that President Abinader receives updated reports from the COE and INDOMET, and it is expected that after the meeting statements will be offered about the additional measures that the Government will adopt in the face of the possible strengthening of the phenomenon, which could reach hurricane status in the coming hours.
The COE maintains 18 provinces on yellow alert and 6 on green alert due to possible flooding of rivers, streams and ravines, as well as urban flooding.
