Santo Domingo.- “Ramón Alburquerque is the example of a person who came from the most humble strata and reached the highest levels of leadership in the country,” This is how the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, remembered the former president of the Senate and political leader.
Around noon this Saturday, the president went to the Garden Memorial Funeral Home, located on 27 de Febrero Avenue, to express his condolences to the family of Ramón Alburquerque, who died at the age of 76 after losing his battle against liver cancer.
Abinader was accompanied by the first lady, Raquel Arbaje, and highlighted the human, academic and political career of Alburquerque, whom he defined as an example of improvement for Dominican youth.
“He was a man with practically universal knowledgewith a solid background as a chemical engineer, an energy expert and with command of several languages,” said the head of state.
The president recalled that, together with the intellectual Hugo Tolentino Dipp, Alburquerque was one of the key figures in the early speeches and efforts for the creation of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), in defense of Dominican democracy.
Abinader also highlighted that although many questioned his not holding more government positions, Alburquerque was always a close and trusted advisor to his management.
He noted that in recent years he was in charge of the relations process with Guyana, especially on issues related to energy and mining exploration.
“He was always our advisor. We had a very special relationship. On our last trip to Guyana, after one of his interventions, the The president of that country himself asked who Ramón was and expressed that he also wanted him as an advisor,” he said.
“He was an example for young people”
For her part, the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, expressed her deep regret for the departure of whom she defined as a man of “extraordinary wisdom, brilliant and deeply hardworking.”
Mejía recalled that he accompanied Alburquerque during the process of his illness and highlighted his vocation for service and his extensive academic training, values that he said should serve as a reference for new generations.
“It is a moment of great pain for his family. We ask God to grant them comfort and strength. His legacy will live on,” said the mayor.
