The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, highlighted this Thursday in Santiago the contributions of the tobacco to the national economy as a result of exports.
The head of state reported that, during the first half of 2022, more than 726 million dollars have been exported.
The president highlighted the importance of this sector in the economic development of the country when he was a speaker at the lunch-conference on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Association of Cigar Producers of the Dominican Republic (Procigar).
The president of Procigar, Hendrik Kelner Casals, expressed his delight because three decades ago the country exported about 80 million dollars and they already exceed 15 times that number.
Kelner assured that the consolidation of the sector has been achieved thanks to the commitment of each partner with the culture, tradition, as well as the socioeconomic stability of the nation.
According to what he said, the tobacco growers had never had state support of the magnitude that it currently has.
“A month into his government (of Abinader) he had the initiative to present the Plan for the relaunch of the industry of the tobaccocoordinated by Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs,” he said.

Procigar partners took the opportunity to recognize both President Abinader and Minister Bisonó for their support of the sector, as well as for promoting the declaration of the tobacco and the cigar as cultural heritage of the country.
In addition, during lunch, Marvin Shanken, founder, editor and writer of the magazine Cigar Aficionadofor the worldwide promotion through its pages of the Dominican premium cigar.
The activity, held in a hotel in Santiago, was also attended by Vice President Raquel Peña.
