Presence of the army helped to collect more in customs: AMLO

After the creation of the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM), which came into force this year, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that the participation of the armed forces in them helped increase the income that is captured through these, according to its fourth Government Report.

“Since customs are in charge of the Secretary of Defense (Sedena) and the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), there has been an increase in income of the order of 20 percent. We are already collecting around 1 billion pesos at customs. There are no leaks and smuggling is not allowed, ”said the president from the National Palace, accompanied by his cabinet.

Within the Government Report, which was delivered to the legislators in the Chamber of Deputies, the government indicated that, until June 30, there are 31 customs under the control of the Sedena, of which 21 are border and 10 are interior. .

Meanwhile, Semar has control of 17 seaports, and two interior customs: Patanco and Mexico City International Airport.

From September 1, 2021, to June 30 of this year, the López Obrador administration explained that the presence of Sedena increased tax collection by more than 30,144 million pesos compared to the same previous period.

In this way, the customs controlled by the Sedena left a collection in the period of 330,241 million pesos, which represented a growth of 10% compared to what they captured in the previous period.

In the customs managed by Semar, the increase in collection was greater, going from 461,200 million pesos to 517,800, which represented an increase of 12.3 percent.

Investment of 80,000 million pesos

During his fourth report, the President pointed out that a plan is under way to strengthen the country’s customs, which includes 19 access points on the northern border, two on the southern border and 16 ports.

This plan will have an investment of more than 80,000 million pesos for the remainder of this year and in 2023.

The arrival of the armed forces at customs, which intensified with the creation of ANAM, has made it possible to limit the illicit trafficking of weapons, ammunition, explosives, drugs and hydrocarbons entering the country, as well as preventing corruption.

The issue of corruption is the great challenge of customs, since they were managed by the Tax Administration Service. In addition, they are key to the country’s connectivity, which is why the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit has highlighted the importance of investing in their infrastructure.

“In 2022, the administration of the Customs Fund continues, which implies an investment of 33,000 million pesos in maintenance works”, highlighted the Treasury in the General Economic Policy Precriteria for 2023.
